History of Easter Seals

A businessman name Edgar Allen lost his son in a streetcar accident in 1907 because of a lack of medical services. This prompted Allen to start a campaign to fund-raise so he could build a new hospital in Ohio where he was from. He learned through this venture that many disabled children were often kept out of the public, which inspired him to create the first organization of it’s kind called the National Society for Crippled Children.

Wanting to give children with special needs the ability to live a normal life, a campaign was launched in 1934 by the National Society for Crippled Children with Easter “seals” to raise money. Donors would put these seals on letters and envelopes to show support, and this was the beginning of the Easter Seals Mission.
